David OReilly

b. 1985

David OReilly (b. 1985, Kilkenny, Ireland) is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and game designer whose distinctive style – merging animation, video games, and digital technology – has made him one of the most respected and influential creative voices of the contemporary scene. His distinctive low-poly, glitch aesthetic and experimental narratives drive works ranging from groundbreaking animated films (Please Say Something, The External World) to genre-defying simulation games. He has also contributed to mainstream culture as a writer for cult animated series (Adventure Time, South Park), and as the designer of the fictional video games in Spike Jonze’s Academy Award-winning film Her.

In 2014, OReilly released his first game, Mountain, and in 2017, his second game, Everything – metaphysical tour de force that redefined video games as an artform. Its trailer became the first interactive project to qualify for an Academy Award. He continues to push boundaries through AR and immersive installations, notably Corona Voicemails (2021-22), a poetic and animated meditation on pandemic isolation. He has received major international accolades, including the Golden Bear at Berlinale (2009), the Cartoon d'Or (2009), and the Golden Nica at Prix Arts Electronica (2017), with exhibitions and screenings at SFMOMA, Centre Pompidou, and leading biennials and festivals worldwide.
